Pilates for the Physically Disabled: How to treat your Students?

In my view, we should always encourage yes, try yes. But it is often better to invest in what the student can do and improve these actions than trying to propose difficult things that he will not be successful in executing.

When we talk about physical disability, we are talking about people who have some limitation in the functioning of the physical-motor system, whether it is related to a cognitive deficit or not.

Firstly, the physical disability should not be treated with differences, but it should have the necessary care according to the student’s needs in Pilates for the physically disabled.

Pilates Method for the Disabled

Pilates for the disabled requires great care. That’s why we have to think about the Method itself and how to adapt to the needs of the client/patient/student, after all, he is looking for the Pilates Method.

It is a very broad subject, and there is no “cake recipe”. Every being is unique, every deficit is unique, and there is no stimulus or standard exercise when it comes to exercise associated with stimuli from others.

A well-done anamnesis, behaviors, well-chosen exercises based on the findings in the anamnesis make the class schedule is optimized, bringing the results.

Remembering that we must often focus on the functional, and work on what the student does with ease and not just the difficulties.

Use functional movements associated with exercises, palpation, and touch stimulation in Pilates for the physically handicapped.

Visual stimuli and exercises that work the functional movements of the body and balance, adapting whenever necessary the movements seeking normality.

Different methods along with Pilates will also always help.
